Boston Bruins Learn to Play Program

Dear AHA families:

Please spread the word to your friends, neighbors and relatives who are Andover residents with kids aged 4-8:

Although it has not been officially announced, Andover has been selected to host a 4 week Learn To Play hockey program ("LTP") in conjunction with the NHL/Boston Bruins.

This program outfits new skaters between the ages of 4-8 with full set of CCM equipment and a Bruins jersey/stick, and the Bruins sponsor a 4 week LTP program run by AHA.

What you need to know:

  1. The child must not be previously registered with USA Hockey.
  2. Registration for the free equipment & 4 week LTP program will open in late July/early August.  Program will run in late September/Early October at the Phillips Academy rinks.
  3. Subscribers to the Bruins newsletter will hear it first so please sign up (https://www.nhl.com/bruins/community/youth-hockey-newsletter)  so that you can be first to register for the program.
  4. Registration is limited to the first 50 kids - this program will fill quickly with people from all over the area!
  5. Andover residents who miss this opportunity will be given the chance to sign up for an AHA run program to accommodate overflow - unfortunately we will not be able to offer free equipment.

Please spread the word - this is a great opportunity to keep building the AHA program from the ground up!!!

Best regards,

Henry Gourdeau

AHA LTS/LTP Director

"Slap Out Epilepsy" Hockey Clinic

Our friends at Reading Youth Hockey have asked us to promote an upcoming charity fundraiser:

Please join Reading Youth Hockey player Julia Higgins on June 23rd, for “Slap Out Epilepsy”, a hockey clinic for players ages 7-15.  Joining Julia will be her cousin, NY Ranger Chris Kreider, and her mentor, Olympian Chanda Gunn

The event will raise money to support the Epilepsy Foundation New England and will be held at Phillips Andover from 9 a.m. until Noon.

Julia was diagnosed with epilepsy in April 2016 in the midst of squirt hockey playoffs.  Since then, each day is different, some more of a struggle than others, yet she never gives in.

Chanda Gunn shares a similar story and similar passions.  Chanda has served many roles, as a former US Olympic goalie, Northeastern University standout, epilepsy warrior, mentor and advocate.  Currently, Chanda leads the Young Leaders Network of the Epilepsy Foundation New England, working diligently to empower kids like Julia to take control of the hand they’ve been dealt and fight!  What better way to show support than on the ice!

The clinic will be run by Chris (currently playing for Team USA in the Men's World Championship!), Chanda, other NHL Professionals and Olympians (announcements coming soon!), Smart Light Sports, along with local high school and college coaches and players.

Attendance at the clinic includes:

- Practice Jersey

- 2 Raffle tickets (more can be purchased day of)

- Motivational speakers

- On-ice skills stations with Professionals, Olympians and local high school and college coaches and players

- Picture and autograph opportunities with Professionals and Olympians

- Snacks and drinks

In addition, there will be a one hour session from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. for special hockey, sled hockey and open skate for those not interesting or able to participate in a traditional clinic setting.

We are asking for a donation of $126 for the 3-hour clinic and $26 for the 1-hour session.  The cost represents the approximately 1 in 26 people in the United States who will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime.  EVERY CENT raised will go to the Epilepsy Foundation New England to support the amazing work they do!

The link to sign up is http://give.classy.org/slapout. Space is limited, so please sign up soon.
